The first ten sweets from Hofmann's dessert chapter

This cookbook was a 1956 wedding gift to my mother. She's gone now — but her recipes aren't. Hofmann's Bayerisches Kochbuch is a working kitchen book, not a pastry-shop catalog — and still the sweets are there, because a Bavarian Sunday required them. Desserts belonged to the week's cooking: fruit, dairy, flour, and whatever the larder actually held.

I did not grow up with a bakery case. I grew up with a woman who could read Fraktur and who treated dessert as part of ordinary cooking, not a separate art. The 1956 kitchen did not apologize for that.

This volume is the first ten recipes of Hofmann's Süßspeisen chapter (Nr. 577–586) from the 26th edition — Birken-Verlag, Munich, 1956. A later volume covers the rest of that chapter. Same method as the rest of the collection: a headnote, historical context, US-adapted measurements, and a week-of-meals grid. Instant PDF download on Etsy. No physical book is shipped.

What you will find These are the opening pantry sweets of Hofmann's Süßspeisen chapter — rice, milk, oats, cornstarch, and stale bread — not pastry-shop strudels. A later volume covers the rest of the chapter. Translated for an American kitchen with headnotes and US measurements.
